Around 100 students of Shakti Nagar-based Lilawati Vidya Mandir took out a procession recently in residential areas to convince residents about the importance of conserving water. They entered the lanes and by-lanes of Shakti Nagar, Roop Nagar and Kamla Nagar and carried the message to almost every home.
Escorted by their school teachers, the students distributed pamphlets and advised residents to use water judiciously. The pamphlet exhorted people not to waste water while washing, brushing teeth and cleaning, etc., check leakage of taps and overflowing of overhead tanks, use b
ucket instead of shower while bathing. The pamphlet was issued by students of the school in collaboration with ministry of environment, NCT of Delhi.
Richa, a ninth standard girl, said, “On the way, I spotted a cooler which was leaking and immediately instructed the household to plug the leak. And they listened to us.”
Citing another experience, she said, “A man was washing his car with pipe, I immediately approached him and asked him to use bucket. He complied”. Summing up her experiences, she says, “It was highly educative.”
Shipra, her classmate, says, “When I distributed the pamphlets, people enquired about it and I then explained to them in detail.” She adds, “People were very receptive to our ideas”.
Kavita Goel, an English teacher of the school, said, “Our school’s Eco-Club keeps on organising such activities to educate the students and their parents. For the last the four years we have
organised essay competitions, speech competitions, etc., focussing on environmental problems and their solutions.
Jasmina Sharma, another teacher and a member of Eco-club of the school, said, “The rally was an effort to make students follow the practice-what-you-preach philosophy.”
Sushma Khurana, principal of the school, said, “We are very much concerned about the problem। To drive home our message forcefully, children are the best and resourceful medium. So, we conceived the idea of a street procession.” According to her, before taking the students out, they had organised a workshop and educated the children on this issue. She also adds, “This is an on-going process for us. In fact, it supplements the education and acts as catalyst in the all round development of students’ पेर्सोनालिटी
Banamali Shukla, an advocate staying in Kamla Nagar, had all praise for these school children and said “A wonderful effort on their part. It is really nice to see these children realising the importance of preserving water and driving home their point forcefully to others.’’
The students and teachers of Virendra Public School, Timarpur, in coordination with an NGO, Mahila Pragati ki Ore' took out a ‘Save water' rally in an attempt to sensitise
the people about this issue and urged them to save water to overcome the problem. The children were all charged up and could be seen explaining about the importance of judicious use of water to passerbys and residents of Timarpur. The rally was headed by Rakesh Kumar, manager and Vanita, school incharge, Rama Mahotra, principal and Usha Nischal of the NGO. Before the rally the students presented short skits, poems and debates focusing on ‘importance of water in our life'. The manager of the school also oriented the students as to how they could save water to deal with scarcity. He also asked them to contribute to government efforts in keeping Yamuna pollution free as this is the only source of water for Delhi.
Speaking on the occasion Nischal apprised all present about government guidelines as how to save water and make best use of available water and urged them them to follow those।
